Environmental & Sustainability Policy

At The Eco Boutique, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are a privately owned business specialising in eco-conscious gifts, homewares, refill products, and second-hand items, both online and in person. Our aim is to make more sustainable living accessible, practical, and affordable.

We recognise the importance of sustainable development and are committed to reducing our environmental impact wherever possible, while continuing to provide high-quality products and services to our customers.

Our Commitment to the Environment

We are continually reviewing how we operate to minimise waste, use resources responsibly, and prevent pollution. Where practical and economically feasible, we prioritise sustainable materials and solutions and seek out kinder alternatives that make a positive impact at scale.

Products

We are committed to learning, improving, and offering products that are as eco-friendly as reasonably possible. While not every product is 100% sustainable, we carefully select items that significantly reduce waste, last longer, and offer a more responsible alternative to conventional options — without making sustainability unaffordable.

Our clothing exchange scheme helps reduce textiles, books, and toys going to waste by offering customers the opportunity to trade items for store credit. We operate clear guidelines on what we can accept and will recycle textiles that are no longer fit for purpose on our customers’ behalf, helping to prevent unnecessary landfill waste. Since opening this scheme we have given over £28,000 in in-store credit in return for outgrown or unwanted items.

We also offer a range of reusable products designed to significantly reduce everyday waste, including menstrual cups and reusable sanitary pads, which greatly reduce the amount of waste generated through period care. Alongside this, we provide refillable skincare and household cleaning products from Miniml, who operate a closed-loop system that allows us to return all empty containers to them free of charge for refilling. For in-store customers, we offer the choice to refill their own containers or purchase durable glass bottles specifically for refilling, helping to reduce reliance on single-use plastic commonly associated with skincare and household cleaning products.

Products, fixtures, or displays that are no longer required are either sold on or donated to ensure they are reused rather than discarded.

Packaging

We actively choose suppliers who are mindful of their packaging and are working to reduce it. Any packaging received through deliveries is carefully reused — whether by offering boxes to support local house moves or using them for customer orders, accompanied by a note encouraging reuse.

We retain and reuse all packaging boxes and materials for reuse either through the rehoming these boxes to customers moving house, or sending deliveries, as well as sending our own orders. All orders are despatched using recycled boxes and filling. The only acception Is for gift wrapping we use recycled tissue paper and jute ribbon to giftwrap orders. Our packaging processes are regularly reviewed to eliminate non-essential materials wherever possible.

Energy Use

Our premises is a single fuel site operating on electric power sourced from renewable energy. We use energy responsibly by:

  • Switching off lights and equipment when not in use
  • Using energy-efficient lighting
  • Making use of energy-saving features on heating systems
  • Only lighting areas that are required rather than entire spaces

Water Use

We are always looking for ways to reduce water consumption. Where possible, we use cleaning methods that minimise water use, such as vinegar-based solutions. We ensure only essential water is used in daily operations and address any leaks promptly.

Carbon Reduction

We take carbon reduction seriously and are actively exploring ways to minimise our emissions across the business. We have an Environmental Management approach in place and are working towards aligning with recognised environmental standards such as ISO 14001.

Our People

We are committed to providing a safe, healthy working environment that prioritises wellbeing and the prevention of injury or ill health. Everyone working with us has a shared responsibility to maintain a safe environment for colleagues and the public.

We value our team and support their development through ongoing learning and training. Where possible, we recruit locally to support the local economy and strengthen community ties.

Community

We aim to operate responsibly within the communities we serve and to minimise any potential disruption caused by our activities. Clear communication and positive engagement are central to how we work, ensuring environmental and community care remains a shared priority.

Continuous Improvement

We are committed to continually improving our systems, processes, and decision-making to better serve our customers, community, and the environment.

We recognise that the livelihoods of our team — and, in part, our suppliers — depend on the long-term sustainability of our business. This is best achieved through our ongoing commitment to quality products, thoughtful practices, and excellent customer service.
